Most of us at some point in our lives have seen dolphins performing in man-made pools jumping and performing tricks but how much more rewarding and natural it is to watch them swimming freely in their natural habitat.
The Costa del Sol can offer visitors numerous common dolphin sights a few miles off shore where we can observe pods of dolphins along the coast. Trips can be taken from numerous locations along the coast where, from a respectful distance we can observe Mediterranean dolphins and porpoises frolicking in the waves.
These wonderful graceful and intelligent creatures can be seen in small numbers or large pods as they swim, play, and feed in the warm waters of the Mediterranean not far from the coast.
There are numerous reputable operators offering dolphin watching excursions from Puerto Marina in Benalmadena in both sailing and motor boats. The marina is also home to some excellent restaurants, bars, disco pubs and shops all bordering the stunning marina.
A short distance further along the coast is Fuengirola marina and although smaller, and not as beautiful as Benalmadena, there are still several companies offering dolphin trips and an inexpensive ferry service travels between Fuengirola and Benalmadena numerous times each day so trips can be booked from either.
Dolphin trips can also be booked from the small but beautiful marina at Cabopino which is a short distance from Marbella.
The marinas of Marbella, Estepona, and Duquesa offer numerous boat excursions and although they may not be specialist dolphin trips, there is every chance of witnessing pods of dolphins off the coast in these areas.
Gibraltar, although not part of the Costa del Sol is a popular destination for tourists taking a day trip from the holiday resorts along the coast and is an ideal place to take a dolphin watching excursion as well as doing some duty free shopping.
Travelling a little further west we arrive at the stunning coastal town of Tarifa with its golden sandy beaches. As well as dolphins the straits of Gibraltar is an excellent place to witness various species of whales including Pilot and even Killer Whales, although these tend to be around in the summer months.
As we all know animals of any variety can be unpredictable and Mediterranean dolphins are wild, free creatures and no-one can guarantee them being where we want them to be. This is all part of the fun of the trip and the experience is all the more memorable if we do witness them enjoying themselves as nature intended.
